Just Assembled -- Awaiting Testing!
I ordered four 15" hoops for the cider press I am building, as I don't have the tools to cut, weld and smooth steel. The joints look strong and the paint coat is very even.
I just assembled the baskets yesterday. For the curious: the hoops each have 25 holes. I had slats 11/16" thick and cut them to 1 5/8" wide which left me with a 1/8" gap in between each slat. I haven't pressed yet, though, and the gap may be a bit wide. I attached the slats with 8x1/2" stainless panhead screws, which worked well. The interior diameter of the baskets ended up being about 13 3/8".
I am very happy with the hoops so far and will update if I can when I finally press some apples. I expect my maple slats (reclaimed & split in places) to fail long before the hoops!
