Operate your press with ease with this new complete motor kit ready to install.

  • 1/2 HP Motor
  • Pulleys & belt w/guard
  • Pillow block bearings w/spacers (3/4'')
  • Motor Safety Hopper
  • All required mounting

Some of our older grinders may not work with our new motor kits. To check, your grinder shaft on the flywheel side must extend at least 6" from the grinder side (measuring the exposed shaft). If you have one of our older grinders without the right length please contact us for a discounted new grinder drum assembly.

If you have another style grinder the kit is designed for a 3/4'' shaft and the end of it must extend beyond the the end of the mounted motor shaft.

Motor kit for American Harvester cider press
HVR Staff Response: 01/01/14: We have now upgraded to a 1/2 HP motor and established an inline on/off switch.

Look closely at the motor kit picture.

The four white nylon straps to secure the wooden apple chute are, well, cheesy. We actually kept our original apple chute as it is a (in my opinion) better design.

Look at the nice sealed, light commercial duty on/off switch in the picture. This is NOT what we received. Rather, our kit came with an inline plastic switch like you use on a night stand light. Our switch failed to work during our first cider making get together.

The larger pulley is cheap but does indeed keep the belt in line. I think the engineers specified a very thin pulley so the wooden safety shield (with the pretty apple decal) could cover it up. You must line up the shield very carefully so the belt and pulley do not strike it. Make the most of the two tiny wood screws provided to fix the shield in place...

Finally, the motor. The 1/3 horsepower, 1.35 s.f. (service factor) rating motor gets stuck with more than three apples. Output shaft is rated at 1,750 rpm. With the pulley(s) provided, expect the ground up apples to land--85% of them in the waiting hopper below and 15% in front of the entire press. The grinding speed is too fast. I'm thinking the engineers decided to increase the rpm's to compensate for a underpowered motor.

I vowed to use this kit for the rest of the season, but this winter, I will buy a variable speed 1/2 horsepower motor with a higher s.f. rating. Oh, and I will also purchase an actual sealed on/off switch as well.

Some gripes
Once installed properly, the motor kit works efficiently. Occasionally if you feed the apples too fast, it sticks and you need to turn the motor off before it stalls. We installed the motor kit on an "older model" grinder and press, and the belt was a little too short. The biggest problem we had was that the wrong bolt and screw bag was shipped, making installation difficult with a few trips to the hardware store and needing to make modifications as one length of bolts was not available locally. HVR did quickly send the proper bolt bag promptly with apologies. The hopper does not fit optimally, leaving gaps. due to the short belt, needed to make alteration to the cowl for the belt and pulley. I'll have to design a better fitting hopper and make a deflector shield. But the grinding now goes delightlfully quickly.

I have had my American Harvester press for 25 years and decided that it was time to motorize it. The kit works like a charm after a couple of modifications. The belt that was sent with the kit ended up being an inch too short to work. I think that there were some design differences between my old model and the new models that the motor kit was designed for. With the longer belt, it makes short work of grinding the apples. I made 60 gallons of cider this season and look forward to doing the same thing in the future. The second issue was that I had to make a deflector to prevent the apple grindings from overshooting the barrel. The lower bolt on the grinder makes a good pivot point for the deflector. This kit makes the cider process much easier than it used to be.

Wow! I just made five gallons of cider to try out the new motor kit. It grinds the apples faster than I expected. Much better than cranking by hand. The only reason I didn't a give five star rating is that I'll have to make a deflector for the back of the press. The apples pass through the grinder so fast that some pieces overshoot the back rim of the basket and end up on the floor. Overall, very good !

Motor kit for American harvester
Instructions on installation of the motor kit were easy to follow and allowed installation without any problems. After installation, I ran it and it worked great. Will have to wait until apple season 2014 to put it to the test.
