The "Homesteader" is a single-tub cider or wine press with the same basic frame and press screw assembly as our Big Double-tub model. It has been specifically designed as an all-purpose fruit press which is capable of grinding and efficiently squeezing apples, grapes and other fruits and vegetables.

See the 'Essentials Kit' or the 'Complete Package' for other items that are needed.

The "Apple Eater" grinding attachment is conveniently mounted on the back of the press - allowing the "pulped" fruit to fall directly into the tub for squeezing (however, this attachment can be mounted independent of the press, allowing both press and grinding operations to take place at the same time!)

Technical Specifications:

  • FRAME: The frame is constructed of rugged laminated hardwood. All joints are dadoed and cross-bolted for full structural rigidity.

  • WOOD FINISH: ALL PRESSES COME UNFINISHED! You will need to protect it with varnish, lacquer, EZ-DO Polyurethane Gel.

  • SCREW: The Acme-threaded press screw is 1 1/2" in diameter, 22" long, and passes through a heavy cast iron cross-arm. The four prong top allows for easy turning and a small piece of 2x4 can be used for more pressure. Pressure is applied to a reinforced press-disc which fits inside the tub. Attached to the bottom of the screw is a cast iron foot which distributes the pressure to the press-disc. It is suggested that you apply a small amount of lubricant to the screw as well as inside the pressure foot. See our Petro-Gel Lubricant.

  • TUBS: The hardwood tub has beveled staves for easy cleaning, it is 12" high, 13 1/2" in diameter, and is banded with heavy steel hoops. The capacity is equivalent to a box of "pulped" apples. One juice lattice rack is included for better juice flow under the tub.

  • GRINDER: The 5 1/2" diameter cylinder has 8 serrated stainless steel knives. A specially designed cast iron grinding box. Operation is made smooth, fast and easy by the use of a 18 lb. cast iron flywheel attached to the grinding shaft.
  • Finished Dimensions: Width(across the front): 31'' x Length (tray): 25'' x Height (floor to top of Acme Screw in the down position): 40''   Weight: 156 lbs

The Press is very good, but some sand paper and use of it will help a lot, I had to sand all the wood peices to get "saw marks" out and also planer marks, Can you use the "wide belt" a little more ?? it would make a lot nicer product, and the " pressure block" It needs to be "round" not just a "ruff cut some what, circle" It is very out of round. But after a quite a while sanding, it was ready to finish, I like the product, but would have been a lot happier if "all the work had been done" as I expected for the price. allen larson

great machine - well built
I got this as a xmas gift for myself this year. shipped quickly and arrived in several large boxes. followed the advice online and in the manual to apply the ez-do urethane before assembly. one can pretty much covers all the surfaces with a little to spare. urethane is not too strong - did it indoors with moderate ventilation around kids and pets. ground about 100 pounds of apples to get 4-5 gallon. used a mix of fuji, golden delicious and red delicious apples from a local farmer/friend. for small batches I don't see the point of a motorized wheel as the flywheel spins the chipper fast and easy and made quick work of the apples. probably about 25 pounds of apples to a binful. hand pressure gets you about 80-90% of the way down, only using a handle to squeeze that last 10%. followed the recs and did not "overdo" the tension as it seemed the flow of juice gets down to a dribble at that point anyway. have to tilt the unit a bit forward to get the juice to flow cleanly from the pan - at a slow trickle it tended to dribble back away from the bucket I used. also, put the unit up on "stilts" with some bricks so I could squeeze into a 5 gallon bucket. this unit is HEAVY - my twin sons helped me move it off the porch so I could hose it off - cleanup was easy. the mesh bags seem durable and good - highly recommend. I am online now to order the wheel kit, as I think I would like the option of moving it around myself. my carpenter neighbor was admiring the muti-ply birchwood used to mount the grinding apparatus - said it is top notch stuff. this is a great purchase and the perfect size for the hobby/enthusiast. if you are looking for commercial scale production, this would probably be too slow, that being said, I squeezed almost 10 gallons of cider - 5 for fermentation and 5 to consume.

Homestead Apple Press
We love the cider press! We purchased one 30 years ago and recently lost that one in a garage fire. Without hesitation we contacted Happy Valley Ranch so we could replace it, because we knew the quality we would be getting. We have an annual get-together with family at least once in the fall and didn't want to miss that. We have already run 25 gallons through (two fun with family gatherings)and we will make juice at least once yet this year.We were very pleased with the speedy service and also the quality of our press. Thanks again! Highly recommended!

The cider press is wonderful. We have used it extensively and pressed gallons of cider. It is also a great novelty item on our orchard. I would highly recommend it to anyone. Thank you. Tal Young
